10 Steps to Making Money with Ebooks

I’ve always said, “Everyone has an ebook inside of them” and that’s because I believe everyone has a story that needs to be shared about something they are passionate about and that they are an expert in.  The unfortunate part is everyone is not a writer.  So I’m going to give you 10 tips on making money with ebooks even if you’re not a writer and hate to write!  The fact is, if you have a business or a passion, then you must have an ebook.  So let’s get started:

STEP#1:  Hire a Great Writer! – My #1 place for finding writer is elance.com.  In fact, I am a paid provider on elance and have ghost written many ecourses and ebooks for clients that came from elance.  Elance not only has writers for hire, but it has website designers, programmers, accountants, lawyers, and more.  My best example is about my Mentor and colleague, Tom Antion, who hired an elance writer to write an ebook on Wedding Toasts (he discovered through keyword research there was a high amount of searches for this niche); so he paid the writer $400 for the ebook, put up a simple one page website (set it and forget it) and makes about $35,000 on income auto pilot for an ebook he didn’t even write.  Furthermore, it’s not his primary business (public speaking and internet marketing is) and he knows nothing about it.  He simply saw a need and he filled it.  Check out his website at:  http://www.wedding-toasts.org/

STEP#2:  Research Your Topic BEFORE You Write the ebook! – So many people “think” they have a great topic, so they spend countless hours writing and researching their ebook.  Then they get it published and no one buys the ebook!  No market for it.  So if you think you have a good topic for an ebook, do yourself and huge favor and go to Google’s “Free” keyword tool and research the keywords of the ebook topic to see how many global and local searches there are per month.  If you have a high amount of searches, then you probably have a pretty good topic. To get the link to Google’s free tool, simply Google the keywords “Google Free Keyword Tool” and click on the first link that pops up.  Now, to take it one step further, go to Amazon and see if any other people are writing on this topic.  If they are, then that’s a good sign that it’s a profitable topic.

STEP#3:  Put up a Website to Sell your ebook on – If this is your business or you want it to be your business or even if it’s a hobby, you should have your own website (not a page on someone elses website).  I recommend having a wordpress website because they are easily searched and found by Google, they are user friendly and they are easy to put up and maintain.  So here are the steps involved in putting up your website:

STEP#4:  Purchase your Domain Name and Hosting Account (where your site will reside) from a reputable company like Bluehost.

STEP#5:  Put Keywords in the Domain Name if possible.  When you purchase the domain name, try to have the main keywords in your domain name.  Here’s an example of a good domain name for the weight loss niche:  www.weightlossforwomen.com;  here’s a bad example of a domain name for weight loss:  www.skinnywomen.com;  People are not searching the keywords “skinny women” but they are searching the keywords “weight loss for women”.  So do your research and try to get a domain name with the keywords if possible.  If not, then you can make up for it by optimizing your site with the appropriate keywords.

STEP#6:  Build Your Own WordPress Website – You can put up your own WordPress Website or you can hire someone at 6-Figure Websites to create a website for you.  In 2011 I became a Website Designer by taking a 6-week online course by Angela Wills at Marketers Mojo.  It was an excellent course, very affordable and I learned everything I know about building websites from Angela and I highly recommend her Website Design Mojo – Coaching Program .

 STEP#7:  Build a List – Once you have your website up, don’t miss the opportunity that many people do to capture email addresses and build a list.  There’s a saying in Internet Marketing, “the money is in the list”!  The best way to build a list and communicate with your list is through Aweber.  I’ve been using this service for almost a decade and they are absolutely wonderful!  They have the best customer service hands down!

STEP#8:  Give away something – Give away something on your site/blog to visitors to get them on your list.  Then once they are on your list and you’ve developed a relationship with them you can start marketing and promoting your ebook!  When visitors go to my www.becomea6figurewoman.com website, they get a free copy of my ebook, “The Lazy Woman’s Guide to a 6-Figure Income”.  Give something of great value!  Always over-deliver.

STEP#9:  Start a Blog – When you put up your WordPress website, you will automatically have a Blog included in that.  Be sure to take the time to blog as it builds a relationship with your visitors because you are giving them good content and helping them.  It will also drive traffic to your site and build your list.  So blogging is a great way to get people to come to your site to see your new blog posts!

STEP #10:  Publish Your Book on Amazon’s Kindle – It’s free!  You can simply format your ebook for Amazon by following their instructions on their website and uploading your ebook and ebook cover.  Then you can say, you are a “published author”.  It helps with credibility and being seen as an expert in your field!  I actually give away a free report that covers all of the details on publishing on Amazon with my 6-week, online course below.
